Trump and Xi Conclude Beijing Summit Calling It a 'Milestone Visit' as Trade, Iran, and Taiwan Dominate Talks

May 17, 2026 | Geopolitics | U.S.-China Relations | Trade

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up a high-stakes summit in Beijing this week that both leaders publicly described in positive terms, with Xi calling Trump’s visit a ‘milestone visit’ and Trump declaring the talks had ‘settled a lot of different problems.’ The reality beneath the diplomatic language is considerably more complex, and the outcomes of the meeting will shape the global economic and security landscape for the rest of 2026 and beyond.

The summit, held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, featured a state banquet attended by some of the most prominent names in global business, including Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Jensen Huang of Nvidia. Their presence underscored how deeply U.S.-China commercial relations remain intertwined, even as tariffs, export controls, and geopolitical competition have fundamentally altered the relationship over the past decade.

According to the Washington Post, U.S.-China merchandise trade has fallen by more than one-third since Trump last visited Beijing over eight years ago. The partial commercial deal signed during his first term failed to achieve its targets, and the United States abandoned its effort to pressure China into reforming its state-led economic model. Instead, the United States has increasingly adopted some of Beijing’s own industrial policy tools, a remarkable shift that few predicted.

Trade and tariffs dominated the substantive discussions. Trump told reporters he focused on trade ‘more than anything else.’ The talks also addressed Iran, with the ongoing energy crisis created by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz giving both leaders urgent reasons to find common ground on de-escalation. China, as the world’s largest oil importer and heavily dependent on Middle Eastern crude, faces serious economic damage from the prolonged disruption to Hormuz shipping.

Taiwan also featured in the discussions, though neither side offered detailed public statements on the content of those exchanges. The Taiwan question remains the most volatile point of potential conflict between the two superpowers, and any meeting at this level unavoidably touches on it.

Iran-linked media added another dimension of tension during the week. Reports surfaced that IRGC-linked outlets called on Tehran to impose fees on submarine cables passing through the Strait of Hormuz and to monitor global data traffic, citing Iranian sovereignty claims over the waterway. The proposal, if ever implemented, would represent a major escalation threatening global internet infrastructure.

Both governments face strong domestic political pressures that constrain how much flexibility their negotiators actually have. Trump faces a Republican base that views China as an economic and security threat. Xi faces his own nationalist pressures and an economy already feeling the effects of the energy shock through manufacturing slowdowns and fuel rationing.

The summit produced no transformative breakthrough. Analysts across the political spectrum described it as stabilization rather than resolution. The underlying structural competition between the United States and China in technology, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals remains fully intact.

What the summit may have accomplished is the establishment of clearer communication channels at a moment when both the energy crisis and geopolitical tensions in multiple theaters create serious risks of miscalculation. In the current global environment, preventing the relationship from deteriorating further may itself be a significant achievement.
