G7 Leaders Head to Evian-les-Bains in France on June 15 With Trump Tariffs, the Iran War, Critical Minerals, and a Fracturing World Trade Order on the Agenda

In four days, the most consequential gathering of major-economy leaders in years will convene on the shores of Lake Geneva. The 52nd G7 Summit opens on June 15 at the Hotel Royal in Evian-les-Bains, France, bringing together US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and European Union representatives. The summit runs through June 17 and will address an agenda shaped by war, protectionism, and a global economy under structural strain.

The summit’s schedule shifted by one day after France moved the dates from June 14-16 to June 15-17, following consultations with G7 partners. Reports linked the adjustment to a conflict with a high-profile White House event on June 14, which coincides with President Trump’s 80th birthday. France declined to explicitly confirm that explanation, but the change illustrated the diplomatic choreography already defining the Evian summit’s preparation.

Trump’s tariff agenda sits at the center of every conversation heading into the summit. The United States currently applies a minimum 10 percent tariff on imports from virtually all G7 partners, with sector-specific and country-specific levies pushing costs significantly higher. The United States and the European Union struck a deal last summer capping tariffs on EU-manufactured cars and parts at 15 percent, a lower rate than the 25 percent duty Trump had originally threatened. But Trump announced last month that he intends to hike those auto tariffs back to 25 percent, claiming the EU has not complied with the terms of the original deal. That dispute, unresolved as of today, will dominate the economic sessions.

Trade analysts and G7 scholars describe the Evian summit as having four core priorities. The first is managing Trump’s tariff war against G7 partners, which has slowed global growth and disrupted long-established trade flows. The second is the renegotiation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which falls due in 2026 and will demand careful navigation by all three North American economies. The third is countering China’s non-market practices and economic coercion, on which there is broad G7 agreement in principle but significant disagreement on tactics. The fourth is sharpening critical minerals and supply chain resilience, which France has identified as the most concrete deliverable it wants to emerge from its G7 presidency.

French Foreign Trade Minister Nicolas Forissier said as he arrived for preparatory discussions in Paris last month that France wants ‘very concrete progress on rare earths and critical minerals, securing our supply chains and ensuring we are not held hostage by certain countries.’ That language is a direct reference to China, which currently controls the production and processing of the majority of the world’s critical minerals, including rare earth elements used in AI hardware, electric vehicle batteries, semiconductors, and defense systems.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be among the invited leaders joining the summit as a guest delegation. He will begin a five-day visit to Europe on June 13 and is expected to hold bilateral talks with Trump on the margins of the G7 meetings. Agenda items include US tariffs on Indian goods, energy cooperation between New Delhi and Washington, and the H-1B visa program, which affects hundreds of thousands of Indian technology workers employed in the United States. The Modi-Trump bilateral at Evian carries significant weight for both countries at a moment when the relationship has faced challenges on multiple fronts.

The Iran war and its global energy consequences will also shape the Evian discussions, even if they do not appear prominently in the published agenda. With Brent crude oil at approximately $97 per barrel and the Strait of Hormuz only partially reopening to commercial shipping, the economic security implications of the conflict are omnipresent. US forces carried out strikes on Iranian missile sites near the Strait of Hormuz on June 10, according to Polymarket data tracking the conflict, followed by Iranian missile responses in the Gulf region. The fragile ceasefire is being mediated by Qatar in its current phase, with both sides exchanging draft proposals to extend the truce.

G7 summits under Trump have not produced lengthy communiques or sweeping multilateral agreements. Analysts who track the summits note that since 2025, the emphasis has shifted to private, frank bilateral conversations among leaders rather than negotiating comprehensive joint statements. The Evian format, set at the intimate Hotel Royal on a secluded lakeside property, supports that approach. The goal, as G7 scholars describe it, is to preserve summit unity while working around Trump’s tendency to reject consensus documents he later regrets endorsing.

For the world economy, the stakes at Evian are significant. The IMF and OECD have both downgraded G7 growth forecasts for 2026, citing the combined drag of tariff uncertainty, energy price inflation driven by the Iran conflict, and the structural disruption of supply chains that the pandemic started and geopolitics has continued. Whether Evian produces actionable agreements or simply preserves working relationships among allies will determine the trajectory of global economic policy through the second half of 2026.
